An oversized mural depicting the four seasons in the Qu’Appelle Valley is taking shape, in a room big enough to accommodate the large work, in the Qu’Appelle Valley Centre of Arts. The eight panels, which are 10 metres long and almost 3 meters tall, are being painted for Communities in Bloom by nine members of the Qu’Appelle Valley Arts Guild under the direction of conceptual artist Christine Rumancik. “The artists got together and brainstormed, and we came up with the theme, four lakes, four seasons for everyone, which had been the slogan used previously to promote Fort Qu’Appelle,” explained Rumancik. The work is designed to be an interactive installation in which various wildlife and local species of animals will be incorporated into the design. “The idea is that you go into each panel and experience a season,” she said. One of the artists working on the mural, Fort Qu’Appelle town councilor Sandra Schlamp, described it as an example of “community co-operation.” The Prairie Co-operative has donated the 15 gallons of paint and Fort Qu’Appelle Home and Building Supply and Fries Tallman supplied the plywood panels. “It is an ongoing thing. It has mushroomed from four panels to eight since we started,” explained Communities in Bloom’s Marie Bill. She expects the mural will be installed in the Pocket Park when the work is completed. “When it is done it has to be sealed and assembled and the wall in the pocket park has to be prepared.”
