Legion Service - Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty presents Jim Jeeves of Wolseley with a Jubilee Medal for Legion Service.

Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal

Forty local volunteers were recognized and honoured for their contributions to their communities last week when they were presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.
A medal presentation ceremony was held in Broadview on Jan. 12 for recipients in the Moosomin constituency. Similar events were also held on Jan. 10 in Arcola for the Cannington riding recipients and on Jan. 13 in Melville for the Melville-Saltcoats riding.
Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty presented the medals to recipients, saying that a Platinum Jubilee is unprecedented so deserves meaningful recognition. As such, this medal was created to celebrate the 70th anniversary year of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the Throne.
“Medals have been awarded to Canadians as part of royal celebrations for over 125 years, since Queen Victoria’s reign. Medals were awarded for Queen Elizabeth’s coronation and for her major anniversary years. Previously Jubilee medals were issued nationally and this time is the first time in Canadian history that a royal occasion has been commemorated with provincial medals,” said Lt. Gov. Mirasty. “This medal program is an excellent way to commemorate her majesty’s devotion to service while celebrating the dedicated service and contributions of people like you who are here this evening.”
His Honour stated that this is only the second time in Saskatchewan’s history that a commemorative medal has been produced here in the province, with the first one created to celebrate the provincial’s centennial in 2005. He said that the Jubilee Medal is presented as a symbol of gratitude for all that people do for the province.
“It is important to acknowledge those who make our community’s better, and by extension making our province better, and to honour those whose achievements inspire us all. I thank each honoury for generously giving of your time and talents to the betterment of our society. Thank you for your service to your community and to Saskatchewan. You’re role models for your neighbours, your colleagues, friends and families,” said Lt. Gov. Mirasty.
Recipients of the Jubilee medals included a wide range of people such as Wolseley’s Stephen Scriver, Jim Jeeves, Harvey Malo, Sandra Taylor and Rose Zimmer; Grenfell residents Tatum Duryba, Larry Parrott, Tyler Thomlinson and Rod Wolfe; Whitewood’s Chad Kelly; Wapella’s Bill MacPherson and Farrell Dodd; Kennedy’s Eli Barsi and Linc Brickley; Kipling’s Pat Beaujot and Alan Batters.
Moosomin constituency MLA Steven Bonk gave praise to the recipients of the Jubilee Medals, saying that they are the people who their communities rely on to make our communities, our province and our country a better place to live and raise a family.
“As this process unfolded and as the nomination started to come through my office, a consistent theme emerged. Everyone who was nominated almost without fail, said that they don’t deserve this, that they were unworthy. I want you to know, there is a reason that each and every one of you is here tonight. It is because of what you do, who you are, that we celebrate you tonight,” said Bonk.
Referring to a quote by Saskatchewan curler Sherry Anderson, Bonk said, “‘Volunteers aren’t paid because they are worthless, but because they are priceless’ – And I think that sums up this evening perfectly.”
During her reign as Queen of Canada, the late Elizabeth II visited Saskatchewan five times, including for the province’s centennial celebrations in 2005. She passed away on Sept. 8, 2022 at the age of 96 years.
