It is with sadness and great love that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Ruby Duke. She passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at the Moosomin Hospital at the age of 91.
Ruby will be sadly missed by her children: Danny Duke, Marilyn Maki and Shirley Hassman; as well as grandchildren, Shaun, Brent, April,
Beth, Shelby (Pratik), Jesse (Alyssa), Blair (Tara) and Candice (Christopher). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Jelyssa, Brandon, Natallya, Cason, Callie, Phoenix, Brody, Haydynn and Vanessa.
Ruby was predeceased by her parents, Raphael and Annie Urzada (née Rathy); husband William Duke (1997); grandson Christopher Maki (2022); her sister Elsie Churi; brothers Wilfred and Archie Urzada.
Ruby will always be remembered as a loving mother and friend. She was an excellent wife, farmer and homemaker. She worked long and hard days on the family farm milking cows and tending to the other animals. After retiring from farming, Ruby decided to work at the Petro Can in Whitewood, SK as a prep cook. Shortly after, William and Ruby took up residence in Whitewood.
Ruby had an immense love for her family and was always happy to have get togethers where she shared stories and her quick witted, sharp sense of humor that she kept with her, her whole life. Her home was always open to family and friends for a coffee or a chat any time of the day. When hosting gatherings, she always made sure that no one left hungry, and that everyone had numerous servings of her delicious cooking. Her cooking was always exceptional, and she made the best fresh bread, stews, cabbage rolls, buns, donuts, cinnamon buns, homemade pies, and other desserts. Her family will never forget the many special holiday suppers they shared with her.
Ruby had many other talents and hobbies that she enjoyed throughout her life. She knitted quilts, purses, baby shoes, mitts and beautiful paintings and drawings that she kept hung on her walls. She had a love for music which included Wilf Carter, Stompin’ Tom, listening to the Saturday Night Get Together and other country music. She was even an attendee of the Craven Country Music Festival with her grandson Shaun, who took her on many other outings. Ruby was an avid gardener and enjoyed tending to her flowers, vegetables and assorted fruit trees in her gardens, which were always decorated with homemade windmills and ornaments. She also loved watching all kinds of birds including hummingbirds coming to visit in her garden and at her window. Ruby remained in her home being cared for her by her grandson Shaun Duke until being hospitalized a few weeks before her passing.
Ruby always made sure to see her loved ones off after a visit. She would stay out to see them drive off and always waved goodbye until they were out of sight. We are happy to say that this is not a goodbye to you Ruby, but a see you soon.
