Date of Death: February 26, 2024

The family of Elroy Edwin Schmidt of Grenfell, Sask. is saddened to announce his passing on Monday, Feb. 26, 2024, at the age of 89 years.
Elroy was born on the family farm near Neudorf, SK and spent his early years there until moving to Grenfell to work. Always very handy at repairing things, he took up electrical work and started his own business, Schmidt Electric, in the mid 1950s. He excelled at all kinds of electrical repairs for local businesses and homeowners and even tinkered in appliance repairs. In the early years, his station wagon with his ladder on top was seen daily around the town of Grenfell and nearby communities. The Schmidt Electric sign proudly hung in his front yard, even following his retirement when his sons took over the business in 1990.
In 1956 Elroy married Mardel Ulmer and they settled into married life in Grenfell and raised three sons. Elroy purchased some farmland near the community in the 1960s and 70s and continued to farm with the help of his sons until well past the age 70.
Elroy and Mardel loved to travel and made many trips in their earlier years to places such as Texas, Hawaii and Germany. He and Mardel were very active in their church in Grenfell. They were very social and took part in local dance clubs and enjoyed many polka fests around the province.
In retirement, Elroy still loved to help sons Tim and Jeff on the farm hauling grain and running errands for as long as he was able. During harvest he would travel to the farm and enjoy watching the work going on in the field. He would join friends and neighbors every day in local coffee shops to keep up with the community and farming news. In 2022 Elroy moved into the Aspen Care Home for assisted living and lived there until his passing. The family is grateful for the wonderful care he received in the facility.
Elroy was an only child and was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Mary Schmidt; his wife Mardel; and son Earl; as well as all of Mardel’s siblings. He leaves to mourn his passing: sons, Tim (Sherry) and Jeff (Lisa); grandchildren, Tracy (Tyler), Kristen (Josh), Shakara (Tory), Danielle (Trevor), Karli (Eric) and Brooklyn; and great-grandchildren, Karver, Asher, Ranger, River, Dagan, Kolter, Bowen, Makenna and Elsie.
An interment and private family gathering has taken place in Grenfell Cemetery.
