CHESNEY – Beverley (Bev) Bernice (nee Buckle) was born on March 18, 1933, at the Yorkton Hospital, the daughter of Dennis and Willa (nee Thompson) Buckle. She was the eldest child in a family of five children. To her siblings she was always referred to as “Bobbi” and that name stayed with her to this day.
Growing up on the family dairy farm, located south of Yorkton, Bev attended Pebble Lake School, and high school at the Yorkton Collegiate. As a young girl, she helped her mother with very specialized sewing and was taught to hand-bead many wedding gowns back in the day. She also learned to knit very young, and continued to do so throughout her life. She gave many pairs of slippers to family, friends and many others who became acquainted with her.
In Nov. of 1951, Bev was united in marriage to Donald Chesney at St. Andrew’s United Church in Yorkton. They were blessed with two children, son, Donny in 1953 and daughter, Dale in 1955. During their married life together Bev worked along side her husband in a mixed farming operation of grain and cattle. In later years Bev worked for a time in housekeeping at the Yorkton Union Hospital.
Bev and Donald enjoyed their life together farming and having fun. They loved to socialize and attended many dances over the years. In the winter they were involved in the Hill Top Curling Club. Bev loved the competition and was a fierce competitor. A highlight of her curling was when she competed with her team in the ladies provincial curling bonspiel in Prince Albert. Bev also loved to bake, and there was a never-ending supply of baking in her home and freezer, which she always shared with family and friends.
Bev was a great hockey fan and followed Donny’s hockey career as a player, a coach, and a general manager and rarely ever missed a game in person or on the radio. Her favorite team was “whichever team of the day” that Donny was involved in.
Bev was very involved with the Eastern Star, of which she was a very loyal and honored long-serving member. She started in the Dubuc Chapter and then the Yorkton Chapter #92, of which she held many positions, and was also a Worthy Grand Matron. In 2013, she was presented with her “60 Years a Star” certificate.
After her husband Donald’s passing in 1996, Bev relocated to Yorkton. It was an easy transition for her as she became very involved as volunteer in St. Andrew’s UCW, the Yorkton Legion and the Yorkton and District Nursing Home. In 2012, she became a resident at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home and remained very involved in all the activities there.
Beverley went to meet her Lord, in the early morning hours of Sept. 4, 2017. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Donald; brother, Danny Buckle; sister-in-law, Avis Buckle; and brother-in law, Ray McTavish.
Beverley leaves to mourn her passing, her sisters, Beryl McTavish of Kelowna, B.C. and Bonni (Des) Jenic of Penticton B.C.; her brother, Dywaine (Marjorie) Buckle of Yorkton, and special cousin and friend, Raymond Buckle of Yorkton.
She is also survived by sister-in-law, Evelyn Chesney; and brother-in-law, Earl Chesney.
Beverley also leaves to celebrate her life; her son, Donny (Cheryl) Chesney of Yorkton; Donny’s children, Derek (Tara) Chesney, and great-granddaughter, Cadence of Saskatoon; Brandi Chesney and great-grandchildren Chesney and Lily of Airdrie, AB; Amber Kriger (Tim) and great-grandson, Tristen, of Coleman, AB; Cheryl’s children, Courtney (Nathan Hopfner) and great-grandchildren, Willa and Maisy of Brandon, MB; Mark (Karin) Peterson and great-grandson Clark of Regina; her daughter, Dale (Jim) Baydak of St. Andrews, MB; Dale and Jim’s children;Tyler Baydak of Yellowknife, NWT and Tanis Baydak and great-grandson, Magnus MacLean, of Winnipeg, MB. She was also a much-loved “Auntie Bev” to many nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 8, 2017 from St. Andrew’s United Church in Yorkton, SK with Rev. Jen Dresser officiating. The readers were Tanis Baydak and Brandi Chesney and words of tribute and eulogy were shared by Derek Chesney. The organist, Shani Apland and members of St. Andrew’s United Church Choir led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “In The Garden,” “I See a New Heaven,” “Here I Am, Lord” and “I Danced in the Morning.” Soloist Cheryl Chesney sang one selection, “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace.” Members of the Order of the Eastern Star provided a guard of honour. The interment service followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with David Buckle, Sheila Buckle, Blaine Buckle, Gail Pankoski, John Chesney and Joan Chesney serving as the casket bearers.
