Edna was born on the family farm near Duff on March 29, 1942, to Philip (J.P.) and Colleen (Kiselbach) Schick; she was the 11th child of 14: nine brothers and four sisters. Edna passed away Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017, in Melville at the age of 75 years.
Edna attended Colmer School, high school in Saltcoats and trained as a psychiatric nurse at Valleyview Centre in Moose Jaw. She was blessed to be well suited to this work; it was close to her heart. During her life of service, she had a variety of work experiences.
Edna took pleasure in being physically active and particularly liked track and field and volleyball in high school. She also enjoyed softball for 15 years, followed by 10 years as a runner, taking in many events including three marathons.
A love for travel developed when a year after graduating from nursing, Edna spent 14 months in Europe. A trip to Australia in 1974 lasted two years, and the return trip spanned Asia overland. She crossed Canada three times and lived in various places, including Yellowknife, NWT. Vancouver , B.C. was her home for 32 years until her retirement to Duff in 2011.
Edna was predeceased by her parents, Philip (J.P.) and Colleen (Kiselbach) Schick; brothers, Art (Pearl), Ernest, Henry (Ruby), Herbert and Wilfred; sisters, Donaven in infancy and Gerty (Henry) Kohlenberg; brother-in-law, Harold Speidel; nephews Kenneth Schick and Perry Schick; and great-nephew Jason Pfligir.
She leaves to mourn her passing: brothers, Dave (Rose), Fernie (Agnes), Vern (Judy) and Wilson (Audrey); sisters Doreen (Jack) Hahn and Evelyn (Edwin) Stich; and many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Edna’s funeral service took place Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at Matthews Funeral Home, Melville, with Doreen Day, certified celebrant, presiding. Participants in the service included Vern Schick and Vivian Murphy presenting the eulogy, Judy Schick reading “A Psalm for the Dying” and Heather Macdonald singing “My God and I,” accompanied by organist Gaylene Matthews, who also led the congregation in the hymns “How Great Thou Art,” “In the Garden” and “Church in the Wildwood.” “The Green, Green Grass of Home” by Elvis Presley was played as a tribute.
Interment took place in the Garden Peace Evangelical Reformed Church Cemetery, of which her grandfather Adam Schick was a charter member. She will join two great-grandfathers, Philip (Filip) Herold and Karl Schick, brothers, Art, Slim and Wilf and a baby sister. Pallbearers were some of Edna’s nieces, Bonnie Schick, Tracey Armbruster, Janilyn Solonenko, Heather Macdonald, Karen Kohlenberg-Richardson, Laurie Macdonald, Brenda Schick and Joanne Blahut.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association or to Kinsmen Telemiracle.
