TransGas, the transmission pipeline subsidiary of SaskEnergy, will be conducting three controlled natural gas flares near Whitewood, SK over the next two weeks. The flares are necessary to help TransGas perform scheduled operational upgrades and inspections of the natural gas system in the area.

One flare was issued for Tuesday, June 27th from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and the next ones will be Wednesday, July 5th and Thursday, July 6th starting at 6:00 a.m. and running throughout the day

During this process, TransGas will release natural gas from the pipeline in a controlled burn called a flare.  While the pipeline will be isolated from the remainder of the system, flaring is required to remove the remaining gas from the line before work can begin.  Flaring is an industry standard procedure when natural gas needs to be released from a pipeline and reduces the carbon footprint of the vented natural gas by 85 per cent.

The flares will be located at a point on the TransGas system approximately five miles south of Whitewood, along Highway 9.  Drivers in the area may see a small flare being emitted from the eight-foot flare stack temporarily attached to the pipeline block valve at the location.

The areas around the flare will be supervised to ensure public safety, and TransGas has notified local Emergency Responders of the upcoming events.  There will be no disruptions to natural gas service for TransGas or SaskEnergy customers during this process.
